Pope Francis has praised Mongolia’s tradition of religious freedom, dating back to the time of Genghis Khan, during his first-ever papal visit to the Asian nation. He met with President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and emphasized the importance of peace and an end to corruption. The Pope is visiting Mongolia to minister to its small Catholic community and improve relations in the region. He also highlighted the need to combat corruption and the dangers of a consumerist mindset. The Mongolian government has declared 2023 as an “anti-corruption year.”
