Colombian President Gustavo Petro urged undocumented Colombians residing in the United States to leave their jobs “immediately” and return to Colombia, as stated in a message he shared on X on Friday morning.

In his post, Petro mentioned that Colombia’s Department of Social Prosperity would provide financial assistance to returnees who participate in its programs.

“Let’s cultivate social wealth in Colombia,” the statement said, translated from Spanish.

This appeal follows Petro’s agreement to President Donald Trump’s demand to accept flights of undocumented migrants from the U.S. after Trump threatened to impose emergency tariffs of up to 50% against Colombia for non-compliance.

In response to the tariff threat, Petro even offered Colombia’s presidential plane to facilitate the return of migrants, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring dignified conditions.

On Sunday, the White House confirmed that Colombia would indeed accept the migrants, and the U.S. would refrain from imposing the threatened tariffs.

Additionally, two Colombian Air Force planes arrived in Bogota on Tuesday following this agreement, bringing back over 200 migrants.

President Petro welcomed the returnees with a post on X, expressing that they are now “free” and in “a country that loves them.”

Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo reported that none of the 200 Colombians who returned on Tuesday had criminal records in either the U.S. or Colombia.

On Monday, Trump suggested that migrants should be secured during deportation flights for safety reasons.
