President of the Catholic League Accuses MSNBC of Engaging in Religious Bigotry in Interview with Newsmax

Catholic League President Bill Donohue told Newsmax on Thursday the only reason there are no repercussions for MSNBC hosts and guests spewing anti-Christian rhetoric is because the network is playing to its audience.

Donohue on Wednesday wrote a letter to MSNBC President Rashida Jones demanding a “vigorous network response” for anti-Christian attacks by network hosts and guests.

“It plays to their audience,” Donohue told “The Chris Salcedo Show.” “Their audience didn’t use to be that way, but they made a change about 10 years ago. They tried to go left, and when you go left today, obviously, means to be engaging in radical secularism.”

Donohue cited two recent examples in his letter to Jones. He wrote on Tuesday, guest Tara Setmayer of The Lincoln Project, an anti-Donald Trump group, “smeared Christians when she referred to them as a ‘death cult.’ She also accused evangelical Christians of being a national liability. ‘Not only have they failed America, but they’ve failed Christianity.'”

On Monday, he wrote, host Joy Reid complained that Iowa has too many “white Christians,” saying they are overrepresented “in the caucuses.” Donohue wrote Reid attributed to them the conviction that “everyone who is not a white conservative Christian is a fraudulent American, is a less-real American.”

“Notice that Joy Reid couldn’t cite a single person who ever said as a Christian, ‘I believe that unless you accept my views, that you’re fraudulent, you’re not a true American,'” Donohue told Newsmax. “I’ve never met a Christian in my entire life who ever believed that, so they make it up.

“They then attribute some nefarious idea, and then they bash people. This woman [Reid] has been engaged in racism against white people. She has engaged in anti-religious bigotry, and it’s deep into MSNBC. She’s not the only one. They bring in [MSNBC columnist] Sarah Posner and many others bashing Christians on a regular basis.”

Newsmax reached out to Jones and MSNBC for comment.
