“Dogs are not only loyal companions but also protectors, providing unyielding devotion and safety to their families,” Trump stated.

“On National K-9 Veterans Day, the First Lady and I stand with our Nation in celebrating the devoted service of these working dogs that assist our law enforcement and military in safeguarding our citizens and homelands,” he added.

Established on March 13th, 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the K-9 Corps has been honored on this date as National K-9 Veterans Day, recognizing the service of over 50,000 police and military dogs currently active, as well as those who have served in the past.

“These courageous dogs leverage their unique skills to perform a wide range of essential functions, mitigating risks for our military personnel. From conveying messages and installing telegraph wires to detecting explosives and serving as patrol dogs, Military Working Dogs (MWDs) have a remarkable history of aiding our country’s elite forces in executing their missions.”

President Trump acknowledged notable K-9s such as Conan, who played a significant role in the operation that resulted in the death of terrorist leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

“Conan, a military working dog from 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, significantly contributed to the neutralization of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi—the world’s leading terrorist. Conan pursued the terrorist into a dead-end tunnel, where he faced his deserved end. Numerous brave military personnel participated in the mission that brought this ISIS leader to justice alongside Conan,” he remarked.

“Thanks to Conan’s efforts, there were no American casualties in the operation, underscoring the crucial role K-9s play in ensuring our national security,” Trump added.

Moreover, the White House shared a photo of Conan with President Trump in the Oval Office during his first term. Conan was also honored with a medal and plaque for his invaluable service.

“After his retirement, Conan was adopted by his former handler and enjoyed many years of tranquil walks and restful naps until he passed away in 2023,” Trump’s statement conveyed.

“There was also Cairo, a member of the Navy’s SEAL Team Six, who was part of the operation against Osama Bin Laden; and Rex, who safeguarded many lives by detecting explosives during the combat missions in Iraq,” the message continued. “These remarkable dogs, along with many others, embody extraordinary courage and commitment in supporting our military personnel.”

“As a Nation, we will keep supporting our working dogs who dutifully protect the American people and our freedoms.”
