On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took a jab at former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, referencing her earlier remarks regarding tariffs.

Leavitt highlighted Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) historic stance on tariffs, especially regarding the United States’ trade deficit with communist China, arguing that she should be pleased with the Trump administration’s “retaliatory tariff” imposed on China.
In a video from 1996 that has recently resurfaced, Pelosi stood in the House and outlined her rationale for economically retaliating against China. She noted that China maintained an average tariff of 35% on all goods imported from the US while only allowing around 2% of US exports to enter China. In contrast, the US imposed a mere 2% tariff on Chinese imports, permitting one-third of items produced in China to be brought into the US. This disparity resulted in 10 million Chinese jobs being dependent on US imports, while only 170,000 American jobs benefited from trade with China. She deemed this an untenable “status quo.”
“On this day, your member of Congress could have drawn the line to say to the President of the United States, do something about this U.S.-China trade relationship that is a job loser for the United States,” she stated at the time.
During the briefing, Leavitt pointed to the clip and enthusiastically remarked: “Nancy Pelosi said, ‘How far does China have to go? How much more oppression? How large is the trade deficit? How many jobs have to be lost for American workers? How much dangerous proliferation has to occur before members of this House of Representatives will declare, ‘I will not support the status quo?’”
“Well, President Trump is finally responding to her appeal,” Leavitt added. “Nancy Pelosi can express her gratitude to President Trump today for the 104% retaliatory tariff that will soon take effect on China.”
