Prime Minister Orban from Hungary to Meet President Trump in Florida on Friday
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is scheduled to meet former President Donald Trump on Friday, March 8 in Florida, as confirmed by Orban’s press chief to Hungarian state news agency MTI late Sunday.
Orban, a nationalist, publicly endorsed Trump’s bid to reclaim the presidency earlier last month.
“We hope the current president will go, and President Trump will return and he will have free hands to make peace [in Ukraine],” said Orban on Feb. 23.
Orban has taken a stance of not sending weapons to Ukraine in response to Russia’s invasion, and has expressed disapproval of Western sanctions against Russia. He has consistently called for a cease-fire in Ukraine to end the conflict.
The Hungarian Prime Minister, in office since 2010, has been at odds with President Joe Biden’s administration, particularly regarding Hungary’s delay in approving Sweden’s NATO membership.
Following a prolonged wait, the Hungarian parliament finally ratified Sweden’s NATO bid last week, with the legislation now awaiting final approval by the Hungarian President this week.
Orban has emphasized the significance of this year’s U.S. presidential election and the European Parliament vote in June, asserting that conservatives in both Europe and the U.S. must unite to “reconquer” institutions in Washington and Brussels from what he perceives as liberal threats to Western civilization.
