Pro-Palestinian Demonstrators to Encircle White House; Security Measures Implemented
Pro-Palestinian activists are calling for an end to the conflict in Gaza and for the U.S. to stop supporting Israel. They are planning a protest outside the White House this weekend, leading to increased security measures, including anti-scale fencing.
Groups like CODEPINK and the Council on American Islamic Relations have announced demonstrations for Saturday, marking eight months of the conflict in Gaza which has resulted in widespread death, hunger, and destruction. The United States, a key ally of Israel, has seen ongoing pro-Palestinian protests in various cities, including marches, vigils, and road blockades.
Several officials have resigned from President Joe Biden’s administration in protest against his policies. Protesters have also disrupted Biden’s campaign events. Biden is currently in France for an official visit.
The U.S. Secret Service has implemented additional safety measures near the White House ahead of the planned protests. Biden and the White House have expressed support for peaceful demonstrations but not for chaos or violence.
There have been incidents of violence at university protests and police have made arrests to dismantle encampments. Concerns have also risen about a rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia during the conflict.
The conflict began when Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, resulting in casualties on both sides. Israel’s response has led to a high death toll in Gaza and allegations of genocide, which Israel denies. Efforts to reach a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful.
