President Vladimir Putin of Russia has announced a three-day ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, scheduled for May 8th to 10th, coinciding with Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations for World War II, as stated by Putin on Monday.

According to the Russian president, this decision was made on “humanitarian grounds” and will result in a suspension of “all military actions” during that period. May 9th marks the celebration of the defeat of Nazi Germany.
An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office responded by stating that “the ceasefire must be unconditional, as anything else constitutes merely Putin’s tactical maneuvers.”
“Russia is of the opinion that the Ukrainian side should take heed of this example,” the Kremlin stated. “Should the Ukrainian side violate the ceasefire, the Russian armed forces will respond appropriately and effectively.”
In contrast, Putin has declined to agree to a comprehensive unconditional ceasefire, tying it to an end to Western arms supplies to Ukraine.
Putin reaffirmed that “the Russian side remains prepared for peace negotiations without preconditions aimed at addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and engaging in constructive cooperation with international partners.”
Leading up to this significant announcement, Ukraine and Russia exchanged long-range strikes. The Russian defense Ministry reported that 119 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight, primarily over Russia’s Bryansk border region. No immediate casualties or damage have been reported.
Previously, Russia dismissed a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire initially accepted by Ukraine.
Additionally, Putin had announced a 30-hour truce around Easter, which Ukraine viewed skeptically but ultimately agreed to.
However, both sides accused each other of breaching the truce.
