The viewership for “The Rachel Maddow Show” has plummeted by 43% in 2024 since Election Day, now averaging only 1.4 million total viewers after Trump’s decisive win over Vice President Kamala Harris.
This decline was evident when analysts compared the average audience numbers for the show from January 1st, 2024, leading up to Election Day, against the show’s ratings post-November 6th.
In 2022, Maddow reduced the frequency of “The Rachel Maddow Show” to once a week to “pursue other projects,” despite her considerable salary, and has recently signed a new contract to continue as a prominent figure at MSNBC in the future.
The network’s biggest star has experienced an even steeper decline among adults aged 25-54, losing a staggering 56% of her audience since the election and averaging just 103,000 viewers in this critical demographic.
Currently, Maddow covers major events for the network, such as Election Night, while also hosting podcasts and engaging in other side projects during her time off from MSNBC.
It was reported that Maddow earned $30 million per year on her previous contract; however, reports from The Ankler suggest her new five-year deal is worth $25 million annually, a figure that MSNBC insiders contest.
Fox News correspondent Joe Concha, who has closely followed media trends, remarked on the unexpected loss of viewers for a host who “strongly supported Kamala Harris.”
“The surprising part is that MSNBC still chose to pay her $25 million for just one night of work a week. Considering her performance, which sees her trailing Sean Hannity at 9 P.M., one has to question if that investment is justified,” Concha stated to Fox News Digital.
Maddow is well-known for her fierce criticism of Trump over the years and has previously pushed debunked theories linking him to Russian interference.
During the height of her popularity, “The Rachel Maddow Show” attracted an average of 2.5 million viewers in 2017, grew to 2.9 million in 2018, reached 2.8 million in 2019, and peaked at 3.2 million in 2020. In 2021, she scaled back her workload after an extended break.
Maddow also expressed her concerns before the election that Trump “would turn into a dictator” if he were re-elected.
