President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering the possibility of Vivek Ramaswamy stepping in for Vice President-elect JD Vance in his Ohio Senate seat.

Governor Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) is preparing to name a successor for Vance, who resigned ahead of Inauguration Day.
Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and a significant ally of Trump, currently co-leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He is believed to have an interest in Vance’s former position, with Trump purportedly backing this idea, as per various reports.
Last week, DeWine and Ramaswamy discussed the potential role, with indications that Trump has encouraged Ramaswamy to accept the position if offered, as reported by NBC News.
Despite many reports regarding these discussions, no public statements have been released by either party concerning the vacant seat, leaving uncertainty for the moment.
“Neither Governor DeWine nor our office has commented on any possible candidates for the pending appointment,” stated DeWine spokesperson, Dan Tierney.
Ramaswamy, who hails from Cincinnati, is also reportedly eyeing a potential run to succeed DeWine as the state’s governor, which would require him to win a primary against DeWine’s close ally, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted.
Husted, often seen as the frontrunner for the Senate appointment, has expressed some hesitations regarding the potential role as he prepares to run for governor following DeWine’s exit.
“DeWine isn’t incentivized to choose Ramaswamy for the Senate, but Vivek poses a significant challenge for Husted,” suggested an unnamed source, according to Politico.
A possible Senate role for Ramaswamy could advance DOGE’s objectives by enabling him to propose legislation aimed at eliminating excessive government spending as a congressional member, while Musk identifies inefficiencies from an external perspective.
Ramaswamy’s interest in the Senate role comes after a perceived division with Trump’s supporters regarding the H1-B visa program. He has advocated for “skilled” foreign worker visas while critiquing American cultural tendencies, claiming they promote educational complacency and trivial pursuits, ultimately resulting in fewer highly skilled engineers.
“The reason leading tech firms frequently hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over ‘native’ Americans isn’t linked to any intrinsic IQ gap (which is a simplistic and inaccurate perspective). A significant factor is the culture. Tackling tough questions requires courageous answers, and if we are serious about addressing this issue, we must face the TRUTH,” Ramaswamy articulated in a provocative post on X.
“American culture has exalted mediocrity over excellence for far too long (perhaps since the 90s or even earlier). This doesn’t begin in college; it starts at a young age,” he continued. “A culture that prioritizes the prom queen over the math olympiad winner, or the athlete over the valedictorian, will inevitably yield subpar engineers.”
“DJT is growing weary of him,” an unidentified source revealed to NBC. “He wants him to take on a different role.”
DeWine mentioned that he could make his decision regarding the Senate appointment as soon as this week.
