Rep. Carter Tells Newsmax: It’s Time for a Year-Round Daylight Saving Time Law
Rep. Buddy Carter has proposed a bill to make daylight saving time permanent, stating on Newsmax that extending daylight hours will have positive effects on Americans physically, mentally, and economically.
The legislation, known as the DAYLIGHT Act (Daylight All Year Leads to Ideal Gains in Happiness and Temperament Act), aims to eliminate the confusion and negative impacts of time changes that occur as Americans prepare to set their clocks forward.
Carter, a pharmacist, emphasized the health benefits of keeping daylight saving time year-round, citing decreases in accidents, heart attacks, and depression, as well as increased physical activity to combat obesity.
He also highlighted the economic advantages, noting a 2% to 4% boost in the economy during daylight saving time and increased productivity among the workforce.
Carter expressed optimism that the bill could pass both the Senate and the House, as there is growing public support for the measure. He stressed the importance of listening to public opinion and addressing issues like obesity through legislation.
While states currently have the option to participate in daylight saving time under the Uniform Time Act of 1966, Carter believes a uniform federal law would be more beneficial in this case.
