Rep. Cloud demands release of Americans detained in Turks and Caicos
Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, spoke to Newsmax on Thursday, calling for the release of five Americans, including a Florida grandmother, who were arrested in the Turks and Caicos Islands for carrying ammunition in their luggage. Cloud emphasized the need for the British territory to review and improve their laws.
Cloud highlighted the recurring issue of Americans inadvertently bringing ammunition in their luggage and being detained. He noted the distressing experiences of those detained, including Sharia Greer being handcuffed to a chair for three nights. Cloud emphasized the urgent need to expedite the return of these American citizens.
Pointing out the friendly relationship between the U.S. and Turks and Caicos, Cloud expressed concern over officials’ lack of understanding regarding the detention of American citizens. He stressed the need for a swift resolution, highlighting that the prison conditions in which the Americans are held do not meet human standards.
Cloud emphasized that the detained individuals did not intend to bring ammunition into the country, and they were caught during screening processes while leaving the country. He insisted on the immediate return of these individuals to the U.S.
