Rep. Comer Tells Newsmax: Presidency Subpoena is Still an Option
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., disclosed to Newsmax that House Republicans have explored the possibility of subpoenaing a sitting president as part of their impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden, finding it challenging, but still considering it as an option.
The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, chaired by Comer, invited Biden to testify in the inquiry regarding alleged influence peddling schemes and other criminal activities involving the president and his family. Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, testified behind closed doors last month and has resisted public testimony despite calls from Comer.
“If the president could be easily subpoenaed, the Democrats would have had Trump in front of the Oversight Committee four years ago,” Comer stated, referencing the first impeachment of the former president. “What we do is invite people to come before considering subpoenas. It’s essential to make sincere efforts to bring individuals in by invitation before resorting to a subpoena.
“Hunter Biden expressed interest in a public hearing, and Joe Biden claims innocence. So, it’s puzzling why neither of them would want to clear their name in front of the Oversight Committee. Three former associates have testified that Joe Biden played a central role in the Biden influence scheme, which is why we want them to testify.”
In a letter inviting Joe Biden to testify, Comer included 10 questions for the president to address, covering topics such as China, Ukraine, Russia, and alleged loans to his brother, James Biden, who also testified privately before the committee. The response from the White House was described as hostile.
“They have been the most opaque administration in history,” Comer remarked. “They consider themselves above the law, but we have evidence of numerous crimes committed by this family. The focus of this investigation has always been the president of the United States, not his son or brother.
“Now we are at the stage of accountability, whether it leads to impeachment, criminal referrals, or both. We need to hear from Joe Biden, and we have made every sincere effort to collaborate with him to address the crucial questions in our investigation.”
