Rep. D’Esposito Spoke to Newsmax About Mayorkas Disdain for Victims of Border Crisis

Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-N.Y., told Newsmax on Thursday he was disappointed but not surprised Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas skipped a House hearing that included testimony from victims of the Biden administration’s border policies.

The House Homeland Security Committee, of which D’Esposito is a member, held a hearing Thursday titled “Voices for the Victims: The Heartbreaking Reality of the Mayorkas Border Crisis,” part of their impeachment proceedings of Mayorkas. Republicans wanted Mayorkas to attend the hearing, but he declined because he reportedly was meeting with Mexican officials over border enforcement.

“It’s sad, but not shocking,” D’Esposito told “American Agenda.” “It has been clear since the tenure of Secretary Mayorkas that the United States of America is not his priority, and today was the perfect example of that.”

The hearing included testimony from Tammy Nobles of Maryland, whose 20-year-old daughter Kayla was raped and murdered in July 2022 by a 17-year-old MS-13 gang member in the country illegally. Josephine Dunn of Arizona, whose 26-year-old daughter Ashley died from fentanyl poisoning in May 2021, also testified on what would have been Ashley’s 29th birthday.

“The mothers made it very clear — one of them [traveled] from Arizona and wanted to hear from Secretary Mayorkas and what he had to say in the face of her daughter’s death,” D’Esposito said. “Yet she traveled all the way here and the secretary of Homeland Security, the person who has actually taken an oath to protect this country from enemies, foreign and domestic, he was too busy.”

D’Esposito said even though the Biden administration and congressional Democrats want more money to address the border crisis, they only want it for processing immigrants and relocating them in the country instead of addressing what really needs to be done.

“They don’t want to fix the problem, they want to just throw money at creating more problems,” he said. “What we have to do here is we need to secure our border. We need to shut the border down and process those that are here and figure out who has come over the border, what they’re doing, who they’re associating with and protect the security of this country. Then we can move forward in allowing people to achieve the American dream but coming through the front door and the right way.”
