Rep. Donalds Urges Supreme Court to Hear Trump Case

Former President Donald Trump’s case should be taken up by the Supreme Court following his conviction on 34 counts of falsification of business records, according to Rep. Byron Donalds on Sunday. He expressed concern that the New York appellate system would delay a decision for too long. 

“In New York, the only chance for this to be overturned would be two or three years down the line,” stated the Florida Republican during an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” “This is why many, including Speaker Mike Johnson and myself, believe that the Supreme Court needs to intervene in this matter.”

Last week, Johnson, R-La., called on the Supreme Court to reverse Trump’s guilty verdict. As it currently stands, Trump’s legal team would need to navigate through New York’s appellate courts before the case could be brought before the Supreme Court. 

Donalds also speculated that the case against Trump was politically motivated and intended to interfere with the election process. 

He mentioned, “There has always been an unspoken agreement that political leaders from opposing parties should not be targeted. When Trump was president, he did not direct his attorneys to pursue Hillary Clinton. However, the current Justice Department has been weaponized to go after him.” 

Donalds also pointed out the differing treatment of Trump and President Biden in regard to the Espionage Act violations. 

Regarding his potential vice presidential candidacy, Trump praised Donalds during a speech in Detroit, stating that the Florida congressman is “very high” on his list. Donalds emphasized his capability to serve as commander-in-chief if necessary, citing his intelligence and decision-making skills. 

He reiterated his unwavering support for Trump’s decisions, including his choice for a running mate or any other matters.
