Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, recently criticized fellow Democratic politicians who participated in President Donald Trump’s inauguration events after previously denouncing him as a “threat to democracy.”

“It’s surprising that people are more upset about performers or artists joining Trump’s inaugural events, while largely ignoring the politicians who labeled him a ‘threat to democracy’—that’s not serious,” Omar (D-Minn.) expressed in a post on X.
“Artists understand they are there to perform and earn money, but those politicians who have spoken out for four years and are now willing to applaud him—those are the ones you should be upset with. They deceived you, and your frustration should be directed at them,” she added.
“Furthermore, no one should expect performers or artists to pledge loyalty to any political party because that’s the hallmark of a dictatorship. In a democracy like ours, individuals should be free to support whichever party they choose without jeopardizing their livelihoods,” Omar concluded.
Numerous prominent Democratic leaders, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton, have accused Trump of being a “threat to democracy,” yet permitted a peaceful transfer of power to the incoming president.
Omar continued her critique of party members during a Thursday interview on CNN with host Kaitlan Collins, while also condemning Trump for skipping Biden’s inauguration in 2020.
“They were disrespectful enough not to invite the Bidens to the White House. The level of indignity and contempt they displayed towards tradition means no one should show him dignity and respect,” she stated.
Collins asked Omar if she believed Biden should have boycotted the swearing-in ceremony, to which Omar responded that Biden acted as a “patriot” by attending, despite their past disputes with Trump.
“President Biden has always embodied the spirit of a true American and a patriot. Given that he did not experience a peaceful transition, he wished to demonstrate to the American people how to do that and serve as a reminder,” she elaborated.
Omar later remarked that while she believed there were exceptions within the Democratic party, “the large number of individuals who showed up without a valid reason… sends the wrong message.”
“The message being sent is that this person, whom we warned would destroy our democracy and is actively dismantling everything we cherish – I’m going to sit here, congratulate him, and applaud him – that’s simply not appropriate,” Omar expounded. “I really don’t understand why they chose to attend.”
Additionally, Omar expressed her apprehensions regarding the environment, the economy, and criticized Trump’s executive orders concerning illegal immigration in her statement made on Wednesday.
“At a time when global conflicts, economic instability, and climate emergencies are leading to unprecedented levels of forced migration, it is utterly disgraceful for the president to abandon those suffering from global crises. This heartless decision will create perilous consequences worldwide,” she emphasized.
“Countless individuals globally are hoping, praying, and depending on the United States to fulfill its promise of being a nation that welcomes them to a land of peace and opportunities. As a refugee, I am thankful for the chance to rebuild my life,” she added.
Omar has previously labeled Trump as an “existential threat to our democracy.”
