Rep. Jamaal Brown in Tough Primary Battle for Alleged Hamas Support
According to The New York Times, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., a member of the House Democrats’ progressive “Squad,” is facing a difficult primary race due to his support for Hamas.
Former Rep. Mondaire Jones, who was once an ally of Bowman, is now backing George Latimer, Bowman’s opponent, in the upcoming Democrat primary on June 25.
Jones criticized Bowman for his stance against Israel, claiming that he has caused “pain and anxiety” among Jewish New Yorkers.
Having lost his House seat in 2022, Jones is now running to unseat Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican.
Regarding the race between Bowman and Latimer, there has been a significant amount of outside spending, with pro-Israel groups investing $10 million in support of Latimer, as reported by the Times.
Since the outbreak of conflict in October, Bowman has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Israel in Congress. He was quick to call for a cease-fire following an attack by Hamas that resulted in over 1,200 Israeli casualties.
Despite accusations of antisemitism, Bowman maintains that he is pro-peace and not against Israel or Jewish people. He has condemned Hamas’ attacks as war crimes but argues that they do not justify Israel’s response, which has claimed many lives in Gaza.
In May, Bowman came under scrutiny for hosting a fundraiser with an extremist Muslim leader who praised the terrorist attacks on Israel on Oct. 7.
