Rep. Jordan tells Newsmax: Contempt Vote against AG Garland is Essential
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, informed Newsmax on Thursday that the House Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, had no alternative but to vote to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of court.
Garland declined to comply with the committee’s subpoena requesting audio recordings of special counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with President Joe Biden and Biden’s ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, citing executive privilege.
Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified documents disclosed that Biden shared classified information from a personal notebook, leading to the conclusion that he “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen.” However, charges were not recommended due to concerns that Biden may present himself as a sympathetic, elderly man with poor memory during a trial.
The Judiciary Committee voted 18-15 along party lines to hold Garland in contempt of Congress. Jordan expressed concerns that the Department of Justice is protecting Biden politically while prosecuting former President Donald Trump for mishandling classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Jordan emphasized the need for equal application of the law, citing the disparate treatment between Trump and Biden in similar situations. He indicated that the committee may consider legal action to compel Garland to comply with their request for evidence.
