On Wednesday, Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna notified four Democratic Mayors that they will be reported to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for implementing sanctuary city policies.

“After this line of questioning, it’s abundantly clear that the policies you all support are actively in place in your cities and directly conflict with Title 8, U.S.C. § 1324, constituting a federal offense,” Luna (R-Fla.) asserted, referencing a federal law that forbids smuggling and harboring migrants lacking legal status.
“While you express concern over a dysfunctional immigration system, you are inadvertently facilitating that very issue,” she added. “I don’t believe you are bad individuals, but I think your ideology is misguided. Therefore, based on your responses, I will be criminally referring you to the Department of Justice for investigation, and I will be sending this over to [Attorney General] Pam Bondi immediately after this,” she informed them.
“Continuing down this path will not result in any positive outcomes for anyone,” she stated, clarifying that her intent was not to “intimidate” the mayors but to highlight how the policies are detrimental to American citizens.
Luna’s statements were made during a House Oversight Committee hearing attended by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (D-Mass.), New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D-N.Y.), Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D-Ill.), and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D-Colo.). All four cities are recognized as sanctuary cities.
This action by Luna coincides with the Trump administration’s ongoing commitment to target “sanctuary cities” that refuse to adhere to stricter immigration regulations.
In related developments, Bondi has already initiated a lawsuit against the city of Chicago, accusing the city of obstructing federal efforts to enforce stricter immigration policies. Moreover, Bondi issued a memo in February indicating that sanctuary cities will be denied access to federal funds from the DOJ.
