Rep. Mace urges GOP to find middle ground on abortion, tells Newsmax

Republican Arizona U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake is actively seeking alternatives to a Civil War-era state law that almost completely bans abortion, as reported by Newsmax .

Lake is aligning herself with a more moderate stance on abortion, similar to that of former President Donald Trump, who is the expected GOP presidential candidate in November. According to Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., it is crucial for Republicans to strike a compassionate tone on abortion issues to gain support from voters.

Both Lake and Trump have criticized a recent decision by Arizona’s Supreme Court to revive a near-total abortion ban, citing the law’s extreme nature. They emphasize the need for exceptions in cases such as the life of the mother, victims of rape, and access to birth control and IVF services.

Trump, who appointed three Supreme Court justices that contributed to the end of federal abortion rights, has also stated that the issue should be left to individual states to decide.

South Carolina’s GOP-led Legislature recently passed a law restricting abortions after cardiac activity is detected, with exceptions for cases where the mother’s life is at risk or in instances of rape and incest. However, opponents like Catherine Templeton advocate for a ban on abortions without exceptions, a stance that Mace believes could hinder Republican success in general elections.

Mace emphasizes the importance of finding a middle ground that supports women’s health while also respecting the sanctity of life. She believes that Trump’s policies align with this approach and can help Republicans appeal to a broader base of voters.
