Rep. Malliotakis Calls for Staten Island’s Secession Due to Migration Issue
Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis of New York’s 11th district has called for Staten Island to secede from New York City due to her disagreement with Mayor Eric Adams’ handling of the migrant crisis. Malliotakis made the statement during a protest against a migrant shelter opening at a former Catholic school on Staten Island. She argued that the mayor should secure the border and listen to the concerns of the community, or else allow Staten Island to separate from the other four boroughs. Elected leaders have filed a lawsuit against the city over the shelter, but migrants are still being housed there. The city is currently providing care for approximately 60,000 migrants.
