Rep. McCaul Tells Newsmax: US Must Support Allies Like During WWII

Rep. Michael McCaul, in a conversation with Newsmax’s John Huddy at the 80th anniversary commemoration in Normandy, France, emphasized the importance of the U.S. continuing to provide Ukraine with weaponry in their conflict with Russia, drawing parallels to the U.S.’s role in defending freedom during World War II.

“Imagine if 80 years ago we had forsaken our allies and allowed a dictator to seize sovereign territory,” remarked the Texas Republican in an interview on “Newsline.” “That’s not the legacy my father’s generation fought for.”

McCaul expressed concern that the isolationist mindset prevalent in the 1930s after World War I still poses a danger.

“We cannot shy away from that responsibility,” he asserted. “Ronald Reagan, the first president I voted for, spoke about leading the free world and contributed to the downfall of the Soviet Union. We must not retreat from that stance and evade it, because it will catch up with us. I believe projecting strength and deterrence is a path to achieving peace.”

The congressman praised President Joe Biden’s poignant speech in Normandy, acknowledging the significance of the day given his father’s involvement in Operation Overlord as a B-17 bombardier.

Yet, McCaul also suggested that former President Donald Trump projected strength, contrasting Biden’s approach as lacking in the same qualities.

McCaul claimed, “The current global tensions are the result of President Biden projecting weakness akin to Neville Chamberlain’s stance towards Hitler. It took a figure like Winston Churchill to stand up against aggression.”

“When weakness is projected, conflict, aggression, and war follow. This is the situation we face today. Churchill referred to it as the unnecessary war, as it could have been prevented earlier on.”
