Rep. Omar’s daughter faces disciplinary action for participating in protests

The daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., revealed that she was suspended from Barnard College due to her participation in a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University.

“I’m an organizer with CU Apartheid Divest @ColumbiaSJP, and in my 3 years at @BarnardCollege I have never faced any disciplinary issues,” Isra Hirsi stated on X. “I just received notice that I am one of 3 students suspended for showing solidarity with Palestinians who are facing a genocide.”

Hirsi emphasized: “Those of us in Gaza Solidarity Encampment will not be intimidated. We will remain steadfast until our demands are met. Our demands include divestment from companies complicit in genocide, transparency of @Columbia’s investments, and FULL amnesty for all students facing repression.”

21-year-old Hirsi was part of a tent encampment organized to protest the war in Gaza. The encampment featured dozens of tents set up on the campus’ South Lawn.

In response, Barnard issued a statement where they mentioned that “a number of Barnard Senior Staff also visited the lawn to request Barnard students participating in the encampment to vacate and informed them that they could face consequences at Barnard if they chose to stay.”
