Rep. Sessions tells Newsmax that Trump’s remarks on Milwaukee are ‘extremely candid’
Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday that former President Donald Trump’s remarks about Milwaukee, the location of the upcoming Republican National Convention, were “very straightforward,” despite media claims that the presumptive GOP presidential nominee had criticized the city.
Reports emerged that during a closed-door meeting with House Republicans on Capitol Hill, Trump referred to Milwaukee as a “horrible city,” a statement that the former president denied making.
While appearing on “National Report,” Sessions addressed the reports and expressed his support for Trump, who is expected to formally accept the Republican nomination at the convention in July.
“Both [Rep.] Byron [Donalds, R-Fla.,] and I were present at the meeting,” Sessions stated. “The president was very candid, discussing not only his comments but also emphasizing the need for the country to address crime and law enforcement issues. He highlighted the importance of upholding the law, which he views as a critical component of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.”
“The president did mention Milwaukee, but he also emphasized the necessity for the country to have a leader who prioritizes safety and security for all citizens, particularly women and children,” Sessions continued. “I stand by his comments because I believe he is correct in his assessment.”
Trump sat down with Newsmax for an exclusive interview on Saturday, stating, “I love Milwaukee, and that’s why I chose it as the host city for the GOP convention.”
Sessions echoed Trump’s sentiment, describing Milwaukee as a “beautiful, vibrant city” that was selected because Trump believes that their policies work effectively in various cities across the nation.
“As delegates, guests, and members of Congress visit Milwaukee, they will witness a city that is vibrant and ready to host us,” he added.
The veteran Texas congressman also pointed out that this is not the first time Democrats have launched smear campaigns against leading Republican candidates.
“Whether it was Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, or now Donald Trump, the Democrats have consistently targeted prominent Republicans,” Sessions remarked. “I have witnessed this pattern before, and while I don’t condone it, it underscores the superior performance of our policies. Trump will bring that strength to the forefront.”
