Rep. Sherrill Calls for Banning Trump from Accessing Classified Documents

Legislation introduced by Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., on Thursday aims to restrict access to classified information for federal officeholders and candidates facing specific criminal charges, as reported by The Hill.

The Guarding United States Against Reckless Disclosures (GUARD) Act seeks to prevent the president, vice president, members of Congress, and federal candidates from receiving classified information if charged with offenses such as obstructing an official proceeding, unlawfully retaining classified defense information, or acting as a foreign agent.

Although the legislation does not mention any individual or party, Sherrill’s press release singled out former President Donald Trump by emphasizing the importance of protecting access to classified information in light of “serious national security charges” against him.

Notably, Sherrill’s statement did not reference Sen. Bob Menendez, a fellow Democrat from New Jersey facing bribery charges.

“In public service, upholding the oath of office and safeguarding national security are paramount,” Sherrill stated. “As a Navy veteran and former prosecutor, I have no tolerance for any breach of public trust, particularly concerning classified information and national security.”

Trump is currently facing indictments for business fraud, unlawful retention of classified documents, and election interference.

“No one, including Trump as the Republican presidential nominee, has a right to classified briefings,” Sherrill emphasized. “This legislation is critical to safeguard intelligence and prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.”
