Rep. Stefanik accused of interference in election by Smith

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., recently lodged an ethics complaint with the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility against special counsel Jack Smith. She accuses him of attempting to unlawfully interfere with the 2024 presidential election by hastening the trial of former President Donald Trump in relation to the Jan. 6, 2021 events at the Capitol.

In a statement, Stefanik stated, “It’s evident to any rational observer that Jack Smith is attempting to disrupt the 2024 election and prevent the American people from reelecting Donald Trump.” She announced the complaint in response to Smith’s actions, claiming he is trying President Trump before the November election.

Stefanik argued that Smith’s rushed prosecution of Trump violates DOJ’s manual, which prohibits attorneys from timing actions to affect elections. She called for discipline from the DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility, suggesting that Smith’s conduct has damaged the credibility of the Department of Justice and the federal government.

The complaint alleges that Smith violated DOJ policies when he requested a trial date for January 2, 2024, despite the complexity of the case and the vast amount of evidence. Stefanik highlighted Smith’s efforts to expedite the case, including seeking a fast-track resolution from the Supreme Court.

She questioned the necessity of rushing the case, especially considering Trump’s due process rights. Stefanik emphasized that Smith’s actions have potentially influenced the upcoming election, raising concerns about fairness and justice.
