Rep. Van Drew praises response to Baltimore Bridge Collapse in interview with Newsmax

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., praised the swift response of the Atlantic City Coast Guard and other first responders to the bridge collapse in Baltimore Harbor on Tuesday.

“There is a sense of urgency here. We need to act swiftly but also thoroughly and efficiently,” Van Drew said on Newsmax’s American Agenda” on Thursday. “We will be transitioning from a recovery phase to a salvage phase. We also aim to reopen Baltimore Harbor as soon as possible.”

As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Van Drew underscored the importance of Baltimore Harbor in the nation’s transportation network.

“Let’s be clear. This is one of the top 10 harbors in the country,” he said. “It handles heavy machinery, automobiles, coal, and other vital products that are either shipped in or out of the United States.”

Van Drew also raised concerns about broader economic implications resulting from the tragedy.

“This is where poor policies affect you,” he stated. “This incident is a tragedy, but so is the inflation and high-interest rates that are causing companies to reduce their inventories, leading to supply chain issues. Now, we can anticipate immediate supply chain disruptions due to the situation in Baltimore.”

Van Drew expressed gratitude for the ongoing rescue operations.

“The priority now is to locate those who are still missing,” he remarked. “I want to extend my thanks to the Coast Guard and all the first responders for their tireless efforts.”

He praised the dedication of all men and women in service, including those from Atlantic City in his district.

“I am proud of the individuals from Atlantic City who are also contributing to the response,” he said. “This is what our men and women in service do; they are willing to risk their lives to provide closure to others and bring peace to their homes.”

The bridge collapse occurred early Tuesday, prompting a massive emergency response. Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing individuals and restore normal operations in Baltimore Harbor.
