Rep. Walberg Urges House GOP to ‘Stay United’ on Newsmax

Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., emphasized the importance of Republican unity in response to a potential challenge to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.

During an interview with Newsmax on Saturday, Walberg stressed the need for solidarity within the party.

Stating on “Wake Up America Weekend,” Walberg said, “No, we need to stick together. We only have next week, one vote to spare.”

While acknowledging Greene’s prerogative, Walberg also highlighted the importance of presenting an alternative to Johnson.

“Marjorie can do what she wants to do, but she has to tell us who would be the speaker under these circumstances,” he explained. “If you don’t have a speaker to offer, then I think you work with the one you have, who has a tremendously tough job to do. He’s doing his best. Our team has to work together to prove we can do the job.”

Greene’s challenge followed the House’s approval of a $1.2 trillion spending package to prevent a partial government shutdown. Despite bipartisan support for the bill, Greene opposed it, referring to it as a “Democrat-controlled bill” in the GOP-led House, as reported by CBS News here.

On Friday, Greene hinted at a potential vote to remove Johnson as speaker, indicating her intention to challenge his leadership. However, she did not provide a specific timeline for when the motion to vacate would be brought to a vote.

“I’m not saying that it won’t happen in two weeks, or it won’t happen in a month, or who knows when. But I am saying the clock has started,” Greene stated. “It’s time for our conference to choose a new speaker.”
