Report: Latino Support for RFK Jr. May Disrupt Biden’s Political Plans
According to Politico, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s potential run for the presidency in 2024 could impact President Joe Biden’s support among Latino voters.
Recently conducted research by Democrat group Equis Research in mid-February revealed Kennedy’s unexpectedly strong appeal to Latino voters in twelve battleground states, as reported by Politico.
In the 2020 election, Biden secured 59% of the Hispanic vote.
This survey data, shared with national and state party leaders, has raised concerns among Latino Democrats regarding Kennedy’s potential campaign.
The poll, which included 2,010 registered Latino voters, showed Kennedy winning one in five young Latino voters and garnering 21% support in Nevada and 17% in Arizona.
In the survey results, Biden struggled to secure Latino support, leading former President Donald Trump to win over Hispanics overall in twelve battleground states, 41% to 34%.
These statistics could potentially lead Republicans to victory in Nevada and Arizona in the upcoming election.
“Kennedy is a well-known figure in Democratic politics, and any backing he receives comes primarily at Biden’s expense,” stated Fernand Amandi, a Hispanic pollster for former President Barack Obama’s campaigns, as per Politico.
In the 2020 election, Biden won Arizona by less than 11,000 votes and Nevada by 34,000 votes.
“They need to elevate their efforts,” said Leo Murrieta, Nevada director for the progressive Make the Road Action, referring to the Biden campaign. “They might underestimate this RFK contender, but he poses a threat, and they are in a precarious position.”
Although currently only on the November ballot in Utah, Kennedy’s campaign and the American Values 2024 super PAC announced last month that they had gathered enough signatures to make the ballot in Arizona and Nevada, as reported by Newsmax.
“If Kennedy secures a spot on the ballot in these states – a significant if – we will ensure that voters are informed about his extreme policies and that MAGA donors are financing his spoiler campaign to indirectly support Donald Trump,” stated Democrat strategist Lis Smith to Politico.
Several Democrats nationally believe that, at 70 years old, Kennedy is unlikely to receive more than 1% of the vote. However, his support could potentially impact the outcome of the presidential election.
“His presence on the ballot in these two states [Arizona and Nevada] poses a major threat to them. He could draw more support away from Biden,” explained Mike Noble, the founder of Arizona-based polling firm Noble Predictive Insights to Politico. “Winning the 270 Electoral College votes goes through the Southwest, and disregarding him would be unwise.”
While some Latinos are backing Kennedy, family members of the late United Farm Workers co-founder Cesar Chavez are endorsing Biden’s reelection campaign, as reported by Newsmax.
“In an election that will determine the fate of organized labor, our Latino community, and our democracy, I could not be more honored to receive the support of my family as one of the many that will drive us to victory in November,” mentioned Julie Chavez Rodriguez, who is also Biden’s campaign manager, as reported by CBS News.
