Report: Soros Invests Millions in Online Election Speech Censorship
A media group funded by leftist billionaire George Soros is pushing for a global plan to pressure Big Tech social media platforms to censor more content ahead of the upcoming presidential election in November.
According to the Media Research Center, the group known as Free Press is spearheading the effort to limit free speech online. The MRC described Free Press as an activist organization masquerading as a journalism operation that uses its substantial resources to influence the federal government and Big Tech to suppress conservative viewpoints.
Free Press, which took credit for assisting in the ban of former President Donald Trump from Twitter, boasted in a news release about a letter sent by a coalition of over 200 organizations, researchers, and journalists to the leaders of major tech companies like Google, Instagram, Discord, X, and TikTok. The letter urged these companies to reduce interventions on their platforms to maintain a “safe and healthy” environment and take “swift action” to protect democracy.
The MRC’s research revealed that Soros funded at least 45 of the signatories with a combined total of $80.7 million between 2016 and 2022.
The letter claimed to be focused on reducing “real-world harms” and combating extremism and attempts to overthrow democratic governments. However, it seems its true purpose was to pressure Big Tech to silence speech that the left opposes as elections approach in 60 countries worldwide in 2024, as reported by the MRC.
“More concerning was the letter’s suggestion that its main target is interference in the 2024 U.S. election,” stated the MRC. “This aligns directly with Soros’ initiatives, in which he has allocated millions of dollars to organizations aiming to interfere in elections by stifling online speech.”
The letter outlined six demands for the Big Tech companies, with the first one calling for investment in “greater platform integrity” by reinstating election-integrity policies, including moderating content related to the “Big Lie,” defined by the Brennan Center for Justice (another co-signatory funded by Soros) as the claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.
According to the MRC, the signatory that received the most Soros funding was Global Witness, which pressured Facebook and TikTok to enhance censorship efforts before the 2022 midterm elections. Global Witness received $20.3 million from Soros between 2016 and 2022.
Another signatory, Strategic Dialogue, received $3.1 million from Soros between 2017 and 2022. This organization was recently involved in a House Judiciary Committee investigation for collaborating on a “hate groups” blacklist with the Soros-funded Global Disinformation Index, targeting conservative and faith-based groups.
“The association of Free Press with this Soros-linked agenda should alarm all Americans,” warned the MRC. “Free Press’s relentless pursuit of censorship and control over the internet cannot be underestimated. This is the same group that proudly claimed credit for pressuring Google and Amazon to remove the ‘dangerous’ pro-free speech platform Parler from their platforms due to alleged ‘election lies.’
