Report: Vice President Contenders Seek Advice from Pence Team
Republicans who are hoping for former President Donald Trump to be the party’s White House candidate and are interested in being his running mate are reaching out to seek advice from former Vice President Mike Pence’s team, as reported by Politico.
Intermediaries for New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott have reportedly been in contact with a former Pence adviser to gain insights on how to navigate the VP vetting process.
“After everyone started to make their intentions clear, we began receiving calls from individuals looking to position themselves for the future,” said a member of Pence’s political team, who requested anonymity.
According to Politico, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump’s former press secretary, could also potentially be a contender, although there is no indication that she is actively pursuing this at the moment.
The advice given to potential candidates is to find ways to contribute value, whether through fundraising, acting as a surrogate on TV or in person, and building relationships within Trump’s circle, which is constantly evolving.
Prior to the events of January 6, 2021, Pence was seen as a close confidante of Trump, and his advisers remain a valuable resource for those seeking guidance.
Meetings with Noem were rumored to take place over the weekend, although her spokesperson denied this, while a representative for Scott denied any backchannel communications. Representatives for Stefanik and Trump did not respond to Politico’s inquiries.
