Representative Mace Mobilizes Trump Supporters, Secures Victory in South Carolina GOP Primary Challenge
Rep. Nancy Mace surprised South Carolina political observers by winning the Republican primary in the 1st District (Charleston) with 57% of the votes, beating out Catherine Templeton (30%) and Bill Young (13%).
Despite facing turnover in her staff and an Ethics Committee investigation, Mace, who was targeted by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for removal, received support from a Super PAC connected to McCarthy. Despite this, she secured the endorsement of Donald Trump, which played a crucial role in her victory.
Mace’s win, along with Trump’s endorsement, was seen as a significant victory in the Republican primaries in South Carolina. She also gained support from Gov. Henry McMaster, who helped secure her nomination without a runoff.
While Mace had previously criticized Trump, their recent endorsement exchange proved beneficial for her. One key moment during the campaign was her response to George Stephanopoulos’ question about supporting Trump despite allegations of sexual assault, which resonated with Trump’s base.
Overall, Mace’s strong stance against the left and her alignment with Trump’s base played a significant role in her victory in the primary.
