Representative Omar and her daughter visit protests in Columbia
Rep. Ilhan Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, was seen back on the Columbia University campus with her mother, participating in a protest against U.S. support for Israel’s actions against Hamas and Columbia’s financial ties with companies doing business in Israel. Hirsi, a student at nearby Barnard College, was arrested last week for trespassing during the demonstration.
Despite the arrest, Barnard College president Laura Rosenbury offered to lift interim suspensions for students with no prior record of misconduct if they adhere to campus rules. Omar commended her daughter for her actions, stating she was “enormously proud” of her for taking a stand against genocide and advocating for change.
Omar also criticized public officials and media outlets for attempting to paint the Columbia protests in a negative light, emphasizing the protesters’ demands for the school to not turn a blind eye to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
