Representative Thompson Introduces Bill to Remove Trump’s Secret Service Protection

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-S.C., has proposed that if Donald Trump is found guilty in any of his four criminal cases, he should no longer be eligible for Secret Service protection.

House Homeland Security Committee Democrats shared Thompson’s comments on X, stating, “Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee — even a former President. It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality.”

Jury selection for the Trump business records case concluded on Friday, marking the first of his indictments to go to trial. Opening arguments are scheduled to begin on Monday for the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president.

A bill named the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act (DISGRACED) has been introduced, aiming to restrict security and government resources for those convicted of a federal or state offense.

Thompson, who oversaw the January 6 Select Committee, highlights in his fact sheet the need for occasional updates to the Secret Service’s mission in response to exigent circumstances.

He emphasizes the necessity to update the law to ensure that protective status does not result in special treatment for those sentenced to prison, including Trump.

The Trump hush money case revolves around allegations that Trump directed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make payments to adult entertainer Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal to keep quiet about alleged affairs. Trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover up these payments.
