Representative Van Drew Calls Blocked Border Bill on Newsmax ‘Piece of Garbage’
The Senate Republicans blocked a border bill on Thursday, aiming to restrict the number of migrants claiming asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., stated on Newsmax that this does not harm Republicans.
“I don’t think it hurts Republicans. I think we have to get the message out — this is so important — what they’re doing, quite frankly, the Democratic Party is awful in this case. This is a bad bill,” Van Drew told “National Report.”
Van Drew criticized the bill for not addressing key issues such as catch and release, ‘Stay in Mexico’ policy, immediate deportation, or the completion of the border wall. He called the bill disingenuous and criticized Democrats for prioritizing optics over real action.
The bipartisan legislation negotiated by senators like James Lankford, R-Okla., Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., faced opposition from Republicans earlier this year. With immigration and border security becoming election issues, Democrats are seeking to counter GOP attacks, spurred by Donald Trump.
“We don’t even need a bill,” Van Drew stated, referring to H.R.2 as a comprehensive solution to border issues. He criticized President Biden for undoing previous border control measures through executive orders.
