Reps. Jordan and Comer recommend referring former Trump attorney Cohen to DOJ

Two prominent Republican members of Congress have officially reported the former attorney for Donald Trump to the Department of Justice for perjury and knowingly making false statements to Congress.

Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and James Comer, R-Ky., sent a referral to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, questioning why the DOJ has not taken action on their previous requests to investigate Cohen.

In their letter, Cohen is identified as a crucial witness in the ongoing case against Trump in Manhattan. The Congressmen express concerns about Cohen’s credibility as a witness and the implications of his testimony on the prosecution of a former president and current presidential candidate.

Jordan and Comer reference a 2019 letter to former Attorney General Bill Barr, outlining multiple instances of Cohen allegedly making false statements to Congress. These include denying fraudulent acts, false employment denials, and misleading claims about Twitter accounts and foreign government contracts.

The referral highlights the significance of Cohen’s testimony in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case against Trump. Cohen’s advisor Lanny Davis has acknowledged the reliance on Cohen’s past Congressional testimony in building the prosecution’s case.

Despite Cohen’s social media posts mocking Trump and raising concerns about his credibility as a witness, legal experts note the challenges his behavior poses for the prosecution.

According to Lance Fletcher, a former Manhattan prosecutor, Cohen’s actions as a potential witness are problematic and raise credibility issues for the case against Trump.
