Republican Congressmen Encourage Trump to Prioritize Economy and Immigration
Republican congressmen are advising Donald Trump to focus his campaign message on immigration and the economy, as these are the areas where President Joe Biden is most vulnerable. According to a report in Roll Call on Tuesday, the congressmen believe that Trump could take advantage of high consumer prices and an open southern border.
They feel that if Trump can stay disciplined and focused on these issues, without letting his legal troubles bog him down, he could win a general election. They argue that the American people want optimism and the belief that the next four years will be better than the last.
Some congressmen, such as North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer, believe that Trump could focus on the border and immigration to appeal to both his Republican base and independent voters in key swing states. They also note that the economy is recovering, but wages are not keeping up with inflation.
In contrast, Biden has struggled to find a reelection message about the economy that resonates with most voters, as reported by Roll Call. Polls have consistently shown that most voters believe Trump and Republicans are better equipped at handling immigration and the economy.
Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley believes that Trump should focus on bringing back American jobs, taking on multinational companies, closing the border, and increasing wages. He argues that this was Trump’s winning message in 2016 and is essential for the Republican party to maintain a working-class focus.
