Republican Group’s Advertisement Challenges Trump’s Claim of Immunity

A $2 million ad campaign was launched on Friday by a group of Republicans to challenge former President Donald Trump’s claims of presidential immunity in his battle against special counsel Jack Smith’s election interference case.

The ad from the Republicans for the Rule of Law features over two dozen conservatives explaining why they favor the rule of law over absolute immunity.

The campaign aims to reach states where information about the immunity argument has been least accessible, such as Alabama and Texas, as well as states directly affected by these arguments, such as Georgia and Pennsylvania.

“There would be no consequences [if absolute immunity were granted],” said Dolores, a conservative from Pennsylvania featured in one of the testimonials. “The Supreme Court must affirm that a president is not immune for crimes committed while in office.”

“If the Supreme Court grants former President Trump’s request for absolute immunity, then he is above the law,” said Kevin, a conservative from Virginia. “This poses a serious threat to the foundations of our Democratic Republic.”

“Our constitutional system is based on legal accountability and equal justice under the law, even for presidents and former presidents,” Sarah Longwell, the executive director of Republicans for the Rule of Law, stated in a statement. “Conservatives inherently believe that no individual is above the law. In this case, that means rejecting the ‘absolute immunity’ claim.”

Trump has argued that a president has absolute immunity for official acts while in office. During arguments in April, several conservative Supreme Court justices hinted at limiting when former presidents could be prosecuted.

The court is expected to announce its decision in the coming month.
