Republican Lawmakers Caution Trump Over Proposed 15-Week Abortion Ban
According to The Hill, some Senate Republicans have advised former President Donald Trump to allow restrictions on abortions to be determined by individual states, rather than pushing for a national 15-week ban on the procedure as the November elections draw near.
Trump’s comments about supporting a 15-week national ban on abortions with exceptions for rape, incest, and life-threatening situations have caused a stir among Republican senators. The issue of abortion is expected to be a key focus in the 2024 presidential election, where Trump will challenge Democrat President Joe Biden.
In a recent interview on the “Sid & Friends in the Morning” show on WABC, Trump mentioned that many people are in agreement on a 15-week restriction for abortions. However, some senators believe that this decision should be left to the states, as emphasized by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization in 2022.
Senators like Pete Ricketts of Nebraska and Josh Hawley of Missouri have expressed their belief that the issue of abortion should be decided by individual states, not through a national mandate. It is reported that while a national 15-week ban on abortions has support among House Republicans, it is not as widely favored in the Senate.
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina plans to reintroduce a 15-week abortion ban later this year, according to The Hill.
