Republican Lawmakers Encourage Washington D.C. to Establish Sister City Relationship with Taiwan
Four Republican members of Congress are calling on Washington, D.C., officials to establish sister city ties with Taiwan.
Sens. Marco Rubio and Pete Ricketts, along with Reps. John Moolenaar and Andy Barr, sent a letter to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, urging her to establish sister city ties with Taipei, Taiwan.
The lawmakers highlighted the need to strengthen connections with Taiwan, stating that it would demonstrate support for the country in the Indo-Pacific region.
In their letter, they emphasized the importance of symbolic partnerships through sister city relationships, especially with Taiwan, which often faces isolation on the international stage.
Rubio has been vocal about addressing issues related to China, including proposing increased tariffs on Chinese vehicle imports to protect American automakers. He also plans to extend tariffs to vehicles produced by Chinese automakers in other countries and limit subsidies for electric vehicles.
