Republican National Committee (RNC) Challenges Pennsylvania’s Voter Law
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has taken action to ensure voter integrity in the upcoming 2024 election cycle by engaging in a new voter integrity case.
The RNC, along with the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, has filed a petition to intervene against the Butler County Board of Elections in order to enforce existing voting laws.
According to a news release by the RNC, before the April 23 primary election, the Secretary of the Commonwealth contacted voters who had cast mail ballots without the required secrecy envelope and directed them to cast a provisional ballot, going against the law in Butler County where such actions are prohibited.
RNC Chairman Michael Whatley stated, “If a vote is not legally cast, it should not be counted. The RNC and PAGOP are working to uphold the law in Butler County and maintain voter confidence in Pennsylvania.”
Pennsylvania GOP Chairman Lawrence Tabas added, “Voters deserve a fair and transparent electoral process, which is why PAGOP has intervened in this lawsuit. We are dedicated to ensuring orderly administration of this November’s election.”
Upon assuming the role of RNC chair, Whately pledged that the organization would focus on voter turnout and protecting the ballot.
The lawsuit argues against the Department of State reaching out to voters with rejected mail-in ballots and encouraging them to cure the ballots in person, stating that there is no legal right to do so under Pennsylvania law.
Pennsylvania, a key battleground state that Republicans aim to win back, remains pivotal in national elections. Before President Donald Trump’s victory in 2016, Republicans had not won the state since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
