Republican Representative Scalise Opposes New AI Regulations
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., stated that Republicans have no plans to introduce any new regulations concerning artificial intelligence.
Scalise made this statement during a meeting with Republicans on the AI task force, as reported by Punchbowl News. House Republicans are against legislation that creates new agencies, imposes new licensing requirements, allocates funds for research and development, or shows preference for one technology over another, according to a source cited by Punchbowl News.
“We just want to ensure that the government does not impede the progress of innovation,” Scalise told Punchbowl News. “This has allowed America to excel in the technology industry, and we aim to maintain this advantage. While we are open to addressing any gaps in existing laws, we are not in favor of imposing heavy regulations or investing billions of government dollars in activities already being undertaken by the private sector.”
Scalise believes that the success of AI is due to the government’s inability to hinder it, as reported by Punchbowl News.
Senator John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., emphasized at a Punchbowl News event on Wednesday that Congress must act swiftly to establish regulations for AI.
