Republican Representatives Push for Removal of Speaker Following Foreign Aid Vote
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., made a statement outside the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, urging action against Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., immediately after the House vote on foreign aid bills amounting to billions of dollars.
Greene stressed the importance of listening to constituents and expressed frustration over the focus on foreign conflicts at the expense of domestic issues. She criticized Johnson’s leadership and called on Republicans to take charge of the House.
“There is a strong demand in the Republican movement for Mike Johnson to step down,” Greene stated.
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., supported Greene’s stance, addressing reporters on Capitol Hill and urging Johnson to resign to prevent a leadership vacuum.
“We want him to announce his resignation in advance so that we do not have a period without a speaker,” Massie explained, advocating for a smooth transition in leadership.
The push for Johnson’s resignation comes amidst dissatisfaction with his leadership and the approval of foreign aid bills, including substantial funding for Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region.
The bills, which also include a measure banning TikTok, will now proceed to the Senate as a bundle, according to ABC News.
Johnson, who has faced criticism for his handling of previous legislative matters, has not publicly responded to the renewed calls for his resignation.
Greene highlighted increasing support within the Republican conference for a motion to remove Johnson from his position, citing the need for change in leadership.
The discussion surrounding Johnson’s future showcases divisions within the Republican Party and the broader political arena as lawmakers address both domestic and international concerns.
Amidst the ongoing debate, Greene emphasized the need for a shift in focus from foreign conflicts to pressing domestic issues. She underscored the importance of addressing the concerns of American citizens.
The demand for Johnson’s resignation underscores the tensions within the GOP as members grapple with key policy decisions and seek to steer their party’s trajectory moving forward.
In response to inquiries about potential Democratic support for Johnson, Massie warned that Republicans were prepared to take independent action if necessary.
The push for Johnson’s resignation reflects broader discontent within the Republican Party and underscores the challenges GOP leaders face in navigating internal divisions and advancing their policy agenda.
