10:00 AM: The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to revoke temporary legal status for approximately 240,000 Ukrainians who have sought refuge in the United States due to the ongoing conflict in their homeland, according to a senior official and several sources familiar with the matter.
This proposed action, set to take effect as soon as April, would reverse the previous welcoming approach to Ukrainians adopted during the Biden administration, potentially expediting their deportation process.
The administration’s shift regarding protections for Ukrainians had been in the works prior to Trump’s public dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week in the Oval Office.
Insiders suggest this is part of a larger initiative by the Trump administration aimed at eliminating legal status for over 1.8 million migrants who entered the U.S. under temporary humanitarian parole programs initiated during Biden’s term.
A Trump executive order issued on January 20th directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to “terminate all categorical parole programs.”
Furthermore, the administration intends to revoke parole for nearly 530,000 Cubans, Nicaraguans, Haitians, and Venezuelans in the coming month.
This plan to rescind parole for those nationalities was first reported by CBS News.
Migrants who lose their parole status may face expedited deportation proceedings.
This development follows the White House’s suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine and the discontinuation of all U.S. military aid to the beleaguered nation as America seeks to push Ukraine toward negotiations.
The rapport between the United States and Ukraine seemed to deteriorate last Friday following a contentious exchange between Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office regarding the war’s current status.
However, Zelensky expressed on Tuesday night his willingness to collaborate with Trump’s “strong leadership” and his desire to “mend things” after their “regrettable” heated discussion.
On Wednesday, the U.S. escalated pressure on Zelensky to cooperate with Trump in organizing peace talks with Russia by halting intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.
“We have taken a step back and are pausing and reviewing all aspects of this relationship,” national security adviser Mike Waltz stated on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, during his congressional address on Tuesday evening, Trump claimed he had engaged in “serious discussions with Russia” and had “received strong signals that they are ready for peace.”
He continued: “I received an important letter from President Zelensky of Ukraine.”
Trump then disclosed that Zelensky’s letter indicated: ‘Ukraine is prepared to engage in negotiations at the earliest convenience to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody desires peace more than the Ukrainians. Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine stands ready to sign it whenever it suits you.’
Trump remarked: “I appreciate that he sent this letter; I just received it a short while ago.”
Trump also criticized Europe for its overall role in the conflict, stating, “Europe has unfortunately spent more on purchasing Russian oil and gas than on defending Ukraine by a significant margin.”
Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump vowed to abolish all immigration programs initiated by the Biden administration, asserting that they exceeded the legal bounds of U.S. law.
