RNC considers restricting NBC’s access to the convention due to McDaniel

The Republican National Committee is considering whether to restrict NBC’s access at its upcoming convention due to the network’s decision to dismiss former RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, as reported by Politico on Thursday.

Both Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump and RNC Chairman Michael Whatley expressed their disapproval of NBC’s decision to part ways with McDaniel after only four days, following internal unrest over her hiring.

“We are evaluating the implications of NBC’s actions for their participation in the convention,” said Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for the RNC and the Trump campaign, to Politico. “Our focus is on ensuring a top-notch event that allows President Trump to present his message and vision in a fair manner.”

While the RNC does not control credentialing for the convention (which falls under the House Periodical Press Gallery), they could impact NBC’s access to the perimeter around the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, where the Republican convention will be held. This could also affect NBC’s live shots, transportation, and hotel accommodations, according to Politico.

McDaniel appeared only once on NBC, on “Meet The Press” last Sunday, after being hired as an on-air political contributor. However, after facing criticism from NBC and MSNBC hosts, NBCUniversal News Group Chair Cesar Conde ultimately decided to part ways with McDaniel on Tuesday night, apologizing to his staff in the process.

Following McDaniel’s dismissal, Trump posted on Tuesday night, “These Radical Left Lunatics are Crazy, and the top people at NBC are weak. They were Broken and Embarrassed by Low Ratings, Highly Overpaid, ‘Talent.’ Bring back free and fair press — Make America Great Again 2024!”

Whatley accused NBC of “selective outrage” in an interview with Newsmax on Wednesday.

Despite this controversy, Whatley stated in a conversation with conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday that the RNC will not advocate for a boycott of NBC/MSNBC over their treatment of McDaniel.

“We want to utilize every available platform to reach the American people. However, individuals will not appear on a network that lacks trust and fairness,” Whatley told Hewitt.

“We understand the need to find alternative ways to engage with American voters. We cannot afford to be stagnant. Communication is vital.”
