RNC Convention Site Securing Protest Zone Relocation by Secret Service
Republican National Convention officials announced on Thursday that the U.S. Secret Service agreed to relocate a designated protest area away from the convention site in Milwaukee, where the event is scheduled to take place on July 15-18.
GOP officials informed The New York Times on Thursday that the Secret Service had decided to designate a park about a quarter-mile from the convention venue as a restricted area for protesters. This decision came after a lawyer for the RNC raised concerns about the potential for increased violence last month. The lawyer’s concerns were expressed to the Secret Service.
Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, praised the Secret Service for including Pere Marquette Park in the security perimeter. In a statement to the Times, GOP leaders urged local officials to expedite the permit application process and select a different location for the protest zone.
However, a spokesperson for the Secret Service informed the newspaper in a statement that the issue is still under discussion and has not been completely resolved.
“The security plan for the 2024 Republican National Convention, including the security perimeter, is currently in development,” stated spokeswoman Alexandria Worley. “Demonstration zones for National Special Security Events are determined by the host city, not the U.S. Secret Service.”
