RNC Criticizes Secret Service for Convention Security Concerns Yet Again

The Republican National Committee has sent a letter to the head of the Secret Service, urging immediate action to address a security concern regarding the proximity of a protest zone to the Fiserv Forum, the site of the convention.

In the letter, RNC counsel Todd Steggerda emphasized the need for “personal and immediate steps” to mitigate the risks posed by this flaw in the security plan.

This marks the third communication from the RNC to the Secret Service on this issue. Additionally, Politico reported that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., also addressed the matter in a letter to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fl., have engaged with the agency on this concern as well, according to Politico and CNN.

Despite the Republican frustrations, the Secret Service maintains that the security plan is sound and that the location of the protest zone falls under the jurisdiction of the city of Milwaukee, not the agency.

Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi expressed confidence in the security plan and reiterated the agency’s commitment to working with federal, state, and local partners to ensure a safe event. He also suggested that the RNC’s actions may compromise security by disclosing sensitive information.

Meetings between RNC and Secret Service officials were scheduled for Thursday, as reported by NBC News.
