According to police, the disaster struck when the roof of the well-known Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo unexpectedly collapsed while popular merengue artist Rubby Pérez was performing on stage.

Authorities have confirmed that Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, was among the deceased.

Reports from local media indicate that Pérez was one of the individuals rescued from the debris.

Enrique Paulino, the manager of Pérez, spoke to local outlets expressing his sorrow that the group’s saxophonist was among those who lost their lives.

“It happened so fast. I managed to take cover in a corner,” he recounted, stating that he initially believed it was an earthquake.

Luis Abinader, the president of the Dominican Republic, visited the nightclub later on Tuesday morning alongside First Lady Raquel Arbaje to extend their condolences to the victims.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub,” Abinader posted on X. “All rescue agencies have mobilized to provide assistance and are working diligently on the rescue efforts. Our thoughts are with the families affected.”

Meanwhile, rescue teams were still searching through the debris for more survivors, as noted by officials.

“We believe that many individuals may still be alive, and that is why the authorities will not stop until every person has been accounted for beneath the rubble,” stated Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the city’s Center of Emergency Operations.

At one of the several hospitals where the injured have been taken, an official stood outside announcing the names of those who survived as family and friends called out desperately for their loved ones.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the roof collapse.
