Rosendale, Republican Representative, Announces Senate Run in Montana
Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont., announced Friday that he’s running in his state’s GOP Senate primary against businessman Tim Sheehy.
“This morning, I officially filed for the U.S. Senate,” Rosendale wrote in a post on X. “We’ve made great accomplishments in the House, only to see them die at the hands of Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer in the Senate. Montanans want a Senator that fights for WE, THE PEOPLE, not the D.C. Cartel!”
The Hill reported that many Republicans had hoped to avoid a primary battle for the seat now held by Democrat Jon Tester. Rosendale lost to Tester in 2018.
Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., who heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee, is backing Sheehy and did not welcome Rosendale’s entry.
“It’s unfortunate that rather than building seniority for our great state in the House, Matt is choosing to abandon his seat and create a divisive primary,” Daines said in a statement. “Tim Sheehy has my full support because he is the best candidate to take on Jon Tester.
“Whichever party wins the Montana Senate seat will control the United States Senate in 2024, and Republicans cannot risk nominating a candidate who gave Jon Tester the biggest victory of his career.”
Sheehy, who announced his candidacy in July, is the founder of Bridger Aerospace, which provides pilots and planes to combat wildfires. He said that he has the capabilities to be successful in the Senate and fight corruption, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“Whether it was in war or business, I see problems and solve them,” Sheehy said. “I’m running for the U.S. Senate because our campaign is about service, duty, and country — not politics as usual.”
