Running Mate of RFK Jr Provides Much-Needed Financial Boost to Independent Campaign
Nicole Shanahan’s role as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate in his White House bid is becoming clearer as she injects millions of dollars into their independent campaign and amplifies their stances on social media.
After being announced as Kennedy’s vice presidential pick in March, Shanahan, a political newcomer, donated $2 million to the campaign, allowing them to stay financially afloat amidst the costly process of getting listed on state election ballots alongside Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Campaign filings show that Kennedy’s campaign raised $5.4 million in March, with $4.5 million spent.
Recent developments include Kennedy gaining access to the ballot in Michigan, a key battleground state. Shanahan, the former wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, also contributed $4 million to a pro-Kennedy super PAC, helping fund an ad in this year’s NFL Super Bowl.
Shanahan’s dual role as both a messenger and financial powerhouse is unique, with experts noting the rarity of a vice presidential candidate being a major donor. While still relatively unknown, Shanahan has been gradually sharing more of her policy stances on social media and podcasts.
Kennedy, known for his anti-vaccine advocacy, has been utilizing podcasts and social media to attract younger voters dissatisfied with the older choices of Biden and Trump. Shanahan is set to join Kennedy in a virtual Earth Day event to discuss the importance of protecting the environment for the health of Americans.
On contentious issues like abortion and border security, Shanahan has also shared her thoughts, emphasizing her support for legal immigration and detailing her personal connections to immigration and health-related issues.
Despite being backed by 15% of registered voters compared to Biden and Trump’s higher percentages, Kennedy and Shanahan are actively campaigning and engaging with voters through various platforms.
